Our Story
Venture North was founded during the 2008 recession, a time that confirmed what we already knew: the entrepreneurs running businesses in economically distressed areas needed our help the most. In 2017, we formalized our commitment to supporting these businesses by becoming a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). Today, 60 percent of the clients we serve continue to face these and other challenges, and we are proud to stand beside these hardworking individuals who drive our communities forward.
From farmers and manufacturers to retail, restauranteurs, therapists, tech innovators, and childcare providers, our clients are the heart and soul of northwest Michigan. They are our neighbors—people who are not only dreaming big but working tirelessly to make those dreams a reality. Whether it’s for a local farm looking to expand, a small business adapting to changing needs, or a childcare center serving families, we are here to help entrepreneurs overcome obstacles and thrive.
As a CDFI, our mission goes beyond just loans—it’s about building relationships, listening, pivoting and offering the resources and expertise entrepreneurs need to succeed. We’re here to partner with business owners, providing not just financial backing but a deep understanding of their unique challenges and goals. Our work is reflected in the success stories of our clients and the continued support we receive from agencies and philanthropic organizations who share our vision.
Let’s talk if you own a business in our neighborhood - any of the ten counties we’re proud to serve.
